MIRI: The Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) will receive a major boost this year with the arrival of three Rapid Intervention Motorcycle (RIM) units.
According to Miri Bomba chief Supt Law Poh Kiong, the units will be at the Lopeng fire station here on January 15.
“We will be receiving three RIM units first,” Law told a group of local media after a pinning of ranks ceremony to 33 Bomba personnel at Lopeng fire station on Thursday.
He is optimistic that with the RIM units, it will provide Miri Bomba with quick access to scenes of mishap.
Meanwhile, on the much awaited Batu Niah fire station which sits on a two-acre piece of land at Jalan Gunung here, Law disclosed that fire station is scheduled to be completed sometime this month.
“The station will begin operation next month,” he said.
He added that 33 officers would be deployed to the Batu Niah fire station upon completion.
“We are encouraging locals (from Batu Niah) to apply to be auxiliary firefighters to assists our officers there,” he said.
The project was initially contracted to a firm for a sum of RM5 million. Construction work began on August 14, 2015 and was scheduled to be completed on November 13, 2016.
On October 26, 2017, the contract was terminated due to financial constraints.
Construction works on the project resumed (with a new firm) on April 17 last year at a cost of RM2.3 million.
