PUTRAJAYA: The nationwide attendance rate for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) written examination, which began today, reached an impressive 97 per cent.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said a total of 402,956 candidates sat for the exam at 3,370 centres across the country.

She said the Ministry of Education (MoE) is currently updating the overall attendance figures, noting that approximately 10,000 students have yet to confirm their attendance.

“We hope to see this attendance rate improve further as the examination progresses,” she said during a press conference on the operation of the SPM examination here.

Fadhlina also highlighted the involvement of 44,968 personnel, including volunteer invigilators, in ensuring the smooth conduct of this year’s SPM.

The initiative to recruit volunteers as invigilators, first introduced by KPM last year, has been continued this year.

“This measure aims to reduce the workload of teachers while providing an opportunity for volunteers to contribute to the SPM process,” she explained.
