SIBU: A total of 91 students from SMK Bukit Assek received free spectacles through the “Vision For Future” programme, an initiative by JCI Mandarin Sibu in collaboration with several JCI branches nationwide.

The programme, which saw more than 400 students and teachers undergo eye screenings, aims to provide assistance to those in need, especially within the B40 group.

According to organising chairman Boston Ho, 91 students were found to require new glasses, with some either not wearing any or still using outdated, unsuitable pairs.

“We discovered one of the most serious cases, a student with nearly 500 degrees of myopia, had no glasses at all.

“This highlights the importance of not waiting until the condition becomes severe before seeking treatment,” he said in his speech during the programme at SMK Bukit Assek today.

The free spectacles were handed over to the students in a ceremony officiated by Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

Ho expressed his gratitude for the strong support and cooperation from the school, teachers, and students, emphasising the programme’s primary goal of raising awareness on the importance of regular eye check-ups and fostering unity in Sarawak, regardless of race or religion.

“We hope this initiative will not only assist families but also encourage students to continue striving for success. Remember, education is not just about academics; it’s about learning skills to help yourself, your family, and your community,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chieng, in his speech, commended JCI for their effort, as the event is more than just the distribution of glasses.

In fact, he said it is a meaningful act that highlights the importance of accessible, inclusive, and affordable eye health, especially for our younger generation.

“Good vision is essential to learning, personal development, and overall well-being. When we help a child see clearly, we are not just improving their academic performance; we are empowering them to pursue their dreams with confidence,’ he stressed,” he said.

Also present at the event were JCI Mandarin Sibu president Alexander Ling and SMK Bukit Assek principal Abdul Rahman Abdullah @ Nicholas.
