SIBU: A total of 800 participants took part in the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) New Year Run at Pulau Li Hua here today (Jan 18).

Tourism, Arts, and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the gathering is a testament to the spirit of unity, determination, and togetherness that defines Sarawak’s diverse community.

“Chinese New Year is a time of renewal—a season to embrace new beginnings and set our sights on a brighter future.

“This run is more than a test of physical endurance; it is a powerful symbol of perseverance, strength, and solidarity.

“It reminds us of the determination we need to overcome challenges and achieve our shared goals,” he said in his speech read out by his representative, Political Secretary to the Premier Joshua Ting, during the programme.

Tiong, who is also the PDP President, said sporting events like this serve as a unifying force in the community, bringing people from all walks of life together in a shared celebration of health, camaraderie, and achievement.

“They create opportunities for connection, foster mutual respect, and strengthen the bonds that hold our society together.

“Furthermore, these events have a ripple effect, inspiring the younger generation to adopt active lifestyles, nurture a sense of sportsmanship, and build confidence,” he added.

He stressed that the event also contributes significantly to local tourism and economic vibrancy, showcasing the best of what the communities have to offer.

“I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the organisers, participants, and sponsors who have made this event possible.

“Your dedication and teamwork embody the true spirit of the Lunar New Year—collaboration, resilience, and progress,” he said.

He also expressed hope that the event would encourage the people to prioritise their well-being and inspire others to do the same.
