KUCHING: The Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) requires up to 70 bags of blood daily to meet the needs of 210 patients.
Each bag of blood is comprised of three vital components—red blood cells, platelets, and plasma—each capable of saving a life.
Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the ongoing blood donations are critical to sustain hospital supplies due to the perishable nature of blood stocks.
“As SGH director Dr. Ngian Hie Ung said, blood is a constant necessity in hospitals to aid accident victims, patients requiring transfusions, and new mothers in need,” Fatimah told reporters at the Blood Donation Programme today.
This event was collaboration between the Sarawak Human Development Organisation (PPIS), the HUS Blood Fund, MRCS Stampin, the Zone 2 Lions Group, and Club 39, held at the HUS Blood Bank.
In conjunction with the SGH Open Day, Fatimah noted that the programme also provides an opportunity for the community to gain insight into the wide array of health services offered at the hospital.
Also present were Sarawak Human Development Organisation (PPIS) president Manjeet Kaur Sidhu, Dr. Ngian and Transfusion Specialist Dr. Wong Yi Shen.
