KUCHING: Sixty-eight people, including 28 children, were evacuated to a temporary relief centre (PPS) following a flash flood last night (Dec 18).
Civil Defence Force (APM) Kuching disaster operations officer Lt Mohd Zaidi Mohd Ali said that 12 houses in Kampung Sungai Bedaun were inundated by floodwaters.
This prompted authorities to evacuate 68 residents from 14 families to the PPS Dewan Sungai Bedaun, which opened at 10.30pm.
The group comprised 33 adults, 23 children, five babies, three disabled and four elderlies.
The evacuees also received welfare packages and sleeping sets from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
Mohd Zaidi added that the flood occurred due to high tides coinciding with heavy rain, compounded by ongoing development in the area.
As at 8.30 am today (Dec 19), heavy rain continues in Kampung Sungai Bedaun, but water levels have receded and remain under control.
