LUNDU: A 60-year-old man is feared missing after falling into a river near Kampung Kelaoh, Lundu yesterday morning (Dec 25).
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said they received a distress call on the incident at 8.20 am.
According to a witness near the scene, the victim, JokepliHamidi, dressed in a light blue long-sleeved shirt and black tracksuit, was seen falling into the river from the boat he was on.
“The victim called for help and tried to swim towards the riverbank. And the witness immediately prepared a boat and tried to assist the victim but lost sight of him due to strong currents,” Bomba said.
A search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched shortly after at 8.50 am, with a rescue boat deployed at Kubu Jetty to search the area where the victim was reported to have fallen.
Surface searching and flushing techniques were used during the operation.
By 6 pm, the victim had yet to be located, prompting authorities to suspend the search and resume efforts today.
