KUCHING: A total of 54 students from underprivileged families received schooling assistance in the form of cash at the ‘2021 Back to School’ programme held at Surau Darul Falah of Kampung Samariang Baru Phase 3 here today.

Senior Minister of Works and Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof officiated at the annual programme.

It was also attended by Law, Federal State Relations and Project Monitoring Assistant Minister Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

Of the total recipients, 30 were primary and secondary school students from Kampung Samariang Baru Phase 3, while the remaining 24 were students from the surrounding areas including Kampung Semerah Padi, Kampung Samariang Lama and Kampung Bintawa.

It is an initiative of the Surau Darul Falah Management Committee as a result of charity collection with the main purpose to alleviate the burden of the target group to buy school supplies with each recipient receiving cash amounting to RM150.

Meanwhile, Hasidah in her brief speech expressed her appreciation to the surau committee for their concern to help parents buy school supplies.

“I was informed that this assistance was supposed to be delivered before the school session started, however it had to be postponed several times due to the current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic which is volatile in the state.

“However, it was successfully organised today by complying fully with standard operating procedures (SOPs); and thank you for the success of holding this excellent programme every year without fail,” she said when speaking at the event.

The Samariang assemblywoman called on the community, especially the youths, to be involved and active in the activities organised by their respective village surau.

“This initiative should be emulated by other communities to diversify activities at the surau, because apart from being used to deliver talks, it can also be used for community activities and so on,” she added.

Also present were Kampung Samariang Baru Phase 3 village chief (KK) Dahlan Jerai and the surau committee chairman Zawawi Daud.
