KUCHING: About 500 people attended the state level Malaysia Day celebration held in the new State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Building on Sunday night.
Among those present were Head of the State, Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Ragad Kurdi Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Datin Patinggi Dato Hajah Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang.
The Chief Minister, in his speech, said thatthe state government would continue to implement development programmes so that the people could enjoy better lives, especially in the rural areas.
He said: “The state has experienced a lot of changes, from nothing to a state that continues to develop in various aspects including economic, social and political” .
Abang Johari added that the state government welcomed the decision of the federal government to continue implementing infrastructure development in Sarawak.
Among the projects close to the people’s hearts was the Pan Borneo Highway, which would greatly benefit the state, he said.
Abang Johari hoped that the Pan Borneo Highway could be completed according to the schedule in order to ease the journeys of the people in the state.
“It will open up more areas for development,” he said.
On the state level Malaysia Day, the Chief Minister said although it was held on a moderate scale this year, it gave a deeper meaning to the formation of Malaysia 55 years ago.
“What is important is that the spirit of unity must be strengthened among the people to ensure that the harmonious and prosperous environment will continue to flourish,” added Abang Johari.
