MIRI: A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday (May 28), destroying 14 units of Penan houses in Kampung Long Bangan Apoh, Baram.
The fire, which occurred just days before the Gawai celebration, has left 14 families homeless.
According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue operation centre, the blaze affected a total of 46 people.
Despite the swift and brave efforts of the villagers to extinguish the flames using available water resources, the fire ultimately consumed 14 units of houses out of the 102 in the village.
The fire was reported at approximately 5am by Maester Lolle, the headman of Long Leng.
Firefighters, led by Maureen Sim, embarked on a challenging six-hour journey via a logging road to reach the remote village.
Upon arrival, the fire crew discovered that non-permanent structures were completely engulfed in flames.
The fire, which spread rapidly posed a significant threat as the houses were only three feet apart.
Fortunately, all residents managed to escape unharmed.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation but relief efforts are now underway to support the displaced families.
