BINTULU: Heavy rain over the past 24 hours has caused floods in low-lying areas in this division.

According to Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Secretariat spokesman Ismail Mahedin, one flood evacuation centre was opened this early morning at Stadium Muhibah here, accommodating 135 people from 45 families, including six babies.

The affected families include those from Sungai Plan squatters area (seven families); Kidurong Avenue (two families) and Sungai Sebatang squatters (11 families).

Water level readings at Sungai Sibiu, Bintulu have reportedly exceeded the danger level.

As at 9.32am today Sungai Sibiu water level was at 6.92 metres high.

However, it was reported that the water level began to recede in the afternoon.

Throughout Friday night, until this early morning, a team of 15 firemen from Bintulu station led by its operation commander Hambali Mohamad was mobilised to the flood affected areas to evacuate the affected families to the relief centre.
