BETONG: Following improving weather conditions and receded floodwaters in three villages in Debak, a total of 404 flood survivors were able to return to their homes today (Jan 21).

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) secretariat reported that two temporary relief centres (PPS), namely Dewan Millenia PPS and Dewan Perpaduan PPS, were officially closed at 12pm.

The evacuees, comprising 120 families from Kampung Lalang, Kampung Bungey, and Kampung Babu, were able to leave the centres as conditions improved.

These relief centres were hastily opened at 1.30am and 12pm on Jan 19 after rising water levels forced villagers to seek temporary shelter.

It was reported that the escalation in water levels was attributed to continuous heavy downpours since Jan 18.

As of today, two PPS remain open in Bintulu and they are providing shelter for 55 flood survivors and 17 storm survivors.

The Kampung Assyakirin Balai Raya PPS is sheltering 17 survivors from five families following strong winds that blew the roofs off from Iris Garden and Pine Court apartments.
