SIBU: A total of 350 needy elderly citizens here were presented with Chinese New Year (CNY) mini hampers and red packets (angpow) by the STM Lottery Sdn Bhd.

The presentation was held at the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCCI)’s Toh Siong hall yesterday, graced by Sibu Member of Parliament Oscar Ling Chai Yew.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Ling believed the Lunar New Year 2024 of the Dragon is a good year.

“A lot of young people this year are also trying to have zodiac sign of dragon babies.  So I hope our nation will have a prosperous year ahead as well as healthy and more harmonious and better economy.

“I would also like to thank the STM Lottery’s effort for organising this meaningful event to help the elderly poor in our society,” he stated.

Meanwhile in a press release from STM Lottery, Sibu is one of the 50 locations selected for its 37th Sports Toto CNY angpow donation campaign.

Beginning Jan 18, the six-day donation campaign would be held in 50 cities and towns nationwide to benefit 18,000 needy senior citizens, aged 60 years and above.

STM Lottery was honoured to have Ling as the guest of honour to hand out the angpows and mini hampers to the beneficiaries.

To date, STM Lottery has contributed over RM25.6 million benefitting more than 455,000 senior citizens nationwide since the inception of the donation campaign in 1988.

“This charitable initiative is an integral part of the Helping Hands programme, a corporate social responsibility and sustainability initiative by STM Lottery, aiming to spread festive cheer with the underprivileged.

“Other than festive donations, STM Lottery also contributes substantially to the National Sports Council on a yearly basis, sporting events organised by local sports associations to help the development of national sporting talents, reading projects and environmental conservation campaigns,” the press release added.
