MIRI: A civil servant was fined yesterday morning after she pleaded guilty to receiving bribe last year to help obtain Temporary Resident Card (MyKAS).
Sabtuyah Osman Ali, aged 32, attached to the National Registration Department at Miri UTC was fined RM5,000 in default of two months’ imprisonment by the Sessions Court here after she pleaded guilty to receiving RM1,000 for the purpose.
The offence was committed between March and April 2018 at a bus stop near Miri UTC here. Sabtuyah was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code which was read to her before Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong.
Anti-corruption deputy public prosecutor Ikhwan Mohd Ibrahim prosecuted, while Sabtuyah was unrepresented.
According to the charge sheet, between March and April 2018, the complainant, originally from Sabah had gone to the National Registration Department (JPN) Miri to process her two children’s identity cards application.
She had sought assistance from the accused who was on duty to process the applications and later asked about the Temporary Resident Card application for her husband, who is an Indonesian.
The accused agreed to help and asked for the complainant’s contact number for her to update on the application status.
A few days later, the accused told the complainant that she had contacted a friend at JPN Sepupok, Niah and told the complainant that a message would be sent regarding the application fees.
On March 23, 2018, the complainant received a message from the accused about the fee charges with RM650 for the Temporary Resident Card application, while the blue identity card cost RM500 each.
During mitigation, the accused appealed for leniency as she has a young child to care for.
