KUCHING: The Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department issued a total of 277 traffic summons during a two-day operation dubbed “Ops Ambang Merdeka” on Aug 30 and Aug 31.
Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu told that the operation was carried out in 13 districts, namely Kuching, Sibu, Miri, Bintulu, Song, Padawan, Bau, Limbang, Dalat, Matu Daro, Marudi, Serian and Saratok.
He explained that the operation was held to enforce traffic laws, prevent road accidents, take action against intoxicated drivers and illegal racing activities as well as to prevent crime.
In the operation that started from 4pm to 3am, they (traffic police) managed to arrest an individual under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for illegal racing in Padawan.
“Meanwhile, two arrests (one in Sibu and one in Limbang) were made under Section 45A of the Road Transport Act 1987 for drunk driving or driving under the influence of alcohol.
“Throughout the two-day operation, the traffic police issued a total of 277 summons for various traffic offences,” he said in a statement.
Alexson shared that the most common traffic offences caught included driving without a licence, vehicle modification, no road tax, expired insurance coverage and not wearing helmet while riding a motorcycle.
He shared that a total of 31 officers and 216 personnel were involved in the operation.
