KUCHING: Sarawak aims to export around 240,000 tonnes of hydrogen to Japan and South Korea by 2028.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this initiative would position the state as a leading producer of clean and renewable energy.

“We are blessed with abundance of water resources, and through technology, we can produce clean energy in the form of hydrogen,” Abang Johari said during the Sarawak Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Chamber’s (DUBS) Aidilfitri gathering at Raia Hotel and Convention Centre on Saturday.

“We plan to export 240,000 tonnes of hydrogen to South Korea and Japan, while 7,000 tonnes will be allocated for domestic use,” he added.

As the Finance and New Economy Minister, Abang Johari said that the state would impose a sales tax on hydrogen exports, providing a new revenue stream for Sarawak.

“This will be another income for Sarawak,” he said.

He further highlighted the state government’s significant efforts in developing infrastructure and the digital economy, particularly in large-scale projects, to benefit Sarawak entrepreneurs.

“Hence, I recommend that DUBS members master technology. There is no other way; we need to have skills in technology, whether it’s digital technology or technology that adds value to our resources,” he said.
