KUCHING: Twenty-two tenants, including four children, lost everything except the clothes on their backs when four double-storey houses at Lorong 10, Kampung Tabuan Dayak were destroyed by fire last night (Feb 16).
Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the 9 pm incident, as all occupants –who were renting the houses — managed to evacuate to safety.
The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang stations were promptly dispatched following a distress call.
Upon arrival, they found the houses beyond saving and began extinguishing the flames using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.
During the operation, firefighters contacted Sarawak Energy Berhad and the Kuching Water Board to cut off power supply and boost water pressure in the area.
The flames were brought under control, and overhaul works were conducted to ensure no reignition.
It was reported that the victims from seven families are being placed at All Saints’ Church, Jalan Tabuan Jaya for temporary shelter.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 11.27 pm.
The cause of the fire and losses incurred are under investigation.
