SIBU: A total of 21 participants successfully completed an 11-week elderly care course held at Methodist Pilley Institute (MPI) premises here recently.

The participants, apart from locals, also hailed from as far as Kuantan, Sabah and Miri.

Presenting the certificates of graduation to the participants was Sarawak Business Federation (SB) Recovery BizFund Initiative co-chair Anne Kung Soo Ching. Also in attendance were MPI director Dr Renco Yong King Hwa and MPI chief executive officer cum principal Hii King Kai.

In his remarks, Yong expressed his appreciation to the SBF and the Sarawak government for their generous sponsorship and funding towards the programme.

He said their commitment to education and social welfare has made this programme a reality, allowing more individuals to gain valuable skills that will benefit both their families and the wellbeing of society.

By learning elderly care, he stressed that the participants have not only gained the skills to take care of their own loved ones but also opened doors to a meaningful and stable career.

He noted that the demand for elderly care professionals is rising, and those with the right knowledge and passion will find numerous opportunities in this field.

Many believe that there are no opportunities in Sibu, that it is better to seek careers elsewhere, he said, adding that this is not true as Sibu has many opportunities, but need skilled and dedicated people to build its future.

Saying that the need for elderly care services is growing, he said, there is potential to develop professional care centres, enhance home-based elderly care, and even introduce new technologies in aging care.

“But none of this can happen if we don’t have the right people. That is why your decision to gain this expertise is so valuable—not just for yourself, but for the entire community,” he asserted.

“I encourage all of you to apply what you have learned, whether at home with your families or in your careers.
“At the same time, never stop learning. The healthcare and elderly care industries are evolving, and there is always more to discover,” Yong added.
