MIRI: Over 20 police reports have been filed regarding repeated vandalism incidents at the newly completed 55.6m steel pedestrian overhead bridge in Tudan, says Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

The RM7.6 million bridge, which was officially opened today (Dec 4), was built to enhance safety for students and pedestrians crossing the busy four-lane road near SK Tudan.

However, its completion has been overshadowed by recurring vandalism and misuse.

“This bridge was long requested by the school to ensure the safety of students as the road is extremely busy.

“After five years of planning and construction, the project is finally complete and stands as the largest pedestrian bridge in Miri,” Lee told the media.

The bridge, equipped with a roof, lighting for nighttime use, and accessibility features for people with disabilities (OKU), was completed on Oct 10 this year.

Construction began on Nov 4, 2022, and was revised in October this year to include additional safety features.

Despite these efforts, the bridge has become a target for vandals.

Lee noted that police reports indicate motorcycles have been ridden illegally across the bridge, and illegal racers or “Mat Rempit”, have been using it at night.

“The headmaster of SK Tudan informed me that more than 20 police reports have been filed due to these incidents. I will raise the issue with the Miri District police chief (ACP Alexson Naga Chabu) and urge for strict enforcement to address this problem.”

He also called on parents and the school community to educate students about the importance of preserving the bridge and using it responsibly for their safety.

“This bridge is for the safety of pedestrians, especially students. It’s essential for everyone to use it appropriately and avoid crossing the busy road directly.”

Any form of vehicles, including motorcycles, bicycles or carts, are not allowed.
