SIBU: The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) is free to admit 18-year-olds as members.

Its Youth chief Micheal Tiang said it was not necessary for the party to amend the age limit as the constitution allowed those aged 18 to become party members.

“From the very beginning, SUPP has set the minimum age as18 years old. Therefore, our Youth section does not need to amend the age limit.

“Whoever joins SUPP at aged 18 or within our youth age will become our member,” Tiang, who is Assistant Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said in a press statement here, today (Jan 11).

He was reacting to Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu’s (PBB) decision to change its constitution and establish another wing to focus on those between 18 and 28 years old.

Tiang, said the SUPP Youth section would organise more activities for youngsters, specially designed for those between 18 and 25 years old.

“Undi18 was recently approved by Parliament, therefore more young people between 18 and 21 would be eligible to cast their votes in the next general election.

“I always encourage party members to reach out to the young. Their aspirations and needs and their interests are very different from other age group,”  said Tiang, who is Palawan assemblyman.

On another matter, Tiang said his party would provide young people with more public service platforms to expose them to public services.

As they are the future leaders, it is important to groom them, and public service provides that opportunity, he said, adding that the young should understand how the government and society work.
