MIRI: A 17-year-old boy has been detained by the police on allegations of raping his 14-year-old girlfriend, resulting in the birth of a baby boy.

The arrest was conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Miri District Police Headquarters on March 20, a day after the victim’s father lodged a police report.

The suspect was apprehended at the premises of the Miri Central Police Station at approximately 1 pm.

According to the facts of the case, the victim delivered the baby boy in the maternity ward of Miri General Hospital on March 19.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s mother was unaware of her daughter’s pregnancy until the previous week, when the victim herself disclosed the matter.

It is understood that the victim and suspect had been acquainted since 2022 and began a romantic relationship in 2024.

In court proceedings yesterday, the Miri Magistrates’ Court directed the suspect to be held at the Tunas Bakti Rehabilitation School in Kuching until the trial date on April 19.

During proceedings, Magistrate Ashok Lingam ruled that the teenager would remain in custody, setting bail conditions at RM5,000 with two local guarantors.

These terms, however, were not met by the defendant, who consequently faces continued detention.
