16 reports so far against PAS lawmaker

KUCHING: Sarawak police have received a total of 16 reports so far against Pasir Puteh MP Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh.

Nik Zawawi said in Parliament that the Bible had been distorted from its original meaning, causing an uproar among Christians in the country.

The PAS lawmaker made the remarks during the debate on the Road Transport (Amendment) Bill 2020 to propose heavier fines for drink driving offenders on Aug 26.

Sarawak Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Denis Leong said police reports were made by various parties, including several Christian associations.

“We are investigating all the reports. Investigation is not completed yet and some actions needed to be taken.

“Once the investigation is completed, it will be referred immediately to the public prosecutor for further instructions,” he said in a statement.

SAC Leong appealed to the public to remain calm and not take any actions that are against the law.

The public are also advised to be careful in issuing statements, either orally or through social media platforms as the police will not hesitate to take action.

On Monday (Sept 7), five non-governmental organisation－Persatuan Adat Asal Bidoyoh, Sarawak Dayak Iban Association, Dayak Bukit Kelingkang, Sarawak Association for People’s Aspiration and YATT Society Sarawak－converged on the Kota Sentosa police station here to urge the law to conduct a proper investigation.

Movement for Change Sarawak also lodged a police report last Thursday (Sept 3).
