HANGZHOU: Fifteen para-athletes from Sarawak are among 113 athletes representing Malaysia in the ongoing 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China.
The Sarawak para-athletes, including five women, will compete in seven sports, namely basketball wheelchair, boccia, lawn bowls, archery, swimming, para table tennis and powerlifting.
Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the Sarawak athletes have targeted a total of two gold medals, four silver medals and 12 bronze medals.
“For the para lawn bowls event, the three para-athletes from Sarawak, this is their first participation in the Asian Para Games.
“We are targeting our para-athlete, Then Chiew Yen, under the category B2 to win a bronze in the women’s individual event.
“God-willing, the other two athletes, Hazel Sigang Daud (B1 category) and Norhasfalinda Hamdan (B2), will give their best,” she said in a statement.
She also hoped that Bunyau can retain his gold medal in the powerlifting event (80kg) on Oct 25, just like he did during the 2018 Asian Games when he clinched the gold in the same event (65kg).
“I hope that our para-athletes in Hangzhou will provide motivational boosts to Sarawakians to demonstrate their exceptional skills.
“Our athletes are indeed very committed to their events, and we are confident that they can produce extraordinary achievements and bring glory to our country and state,” she added.
