MIRI: Miri is well positioned to attract and host major international sporting events, according to Sarawak’s Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin.

Speaking after flagging off Stage Seven of the 2024 Petronas Le Tour de Langkawi (LTDL) on Saturday, Lee stressed on the city’s potential as a prime venue for such events.

“Miri offers an ideal setting for international races, particularly cycling events, with its flat terrain, coastal location, and picturesque views,” he said.

“We’ve successfully hosted both professional and amateur bike races, and we hope to see more events like yacht competitions and other international sports taking place here,” Lee added.

The LTDL, which brought in a total of 22 teams and 132 cyclists, served as a key platform to promote Miri as a resort city.

The race, covering 169.3 kilometres starting from Miri to Bintulu, showcased the city’s capability to manage large-scale events while attracting international attention.

In addition to promoting tourism, Lee praised the efforts of Batik Air and Malaysia Airlines (MAS) in facilitating the logistical segment of the event.

He revealed that Batik Air had arranged five flights from Johor and Kuala Lumpur to Miri, while MAS organised special cargo flights to transport the cyclists’ equipment.

“Their cooperation has been vital in ensuring the smooth execution of this event,” Lee noted.

Also present at the flag-off ceremony was Datuk Dr. Ripin Lamat, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sport, and Entrepreneur Development II.
