13 people have died of rabies this year

KUCHING : Of the 15 rabies cases involving humans recorded by Sarawak this year, 13 resulted in deaths.

State Health director, Dr Ooi Choo Huck said in a statement that these cases in Sarawak were recorded between January 1 to August 7.

“For the same period last year, there were eight cases. This means there has been an increase of seven cases or 87.50 per cent.

“Cumulatively, the rabies cases among humans in Sarawak were reported as epidemic in 2017. Since then, Sarawak has recorded 70 human rabies cases with 63 resulting in deaths,” he said.

Dr Ooi added, from the 15 cases this year, five were from Sibu, four from Serian, three from Kuching , two were from Bintulu and one from Kota Samarahan.

“Out of the 13 cases involving dog bites and cat scratches, eight cases did not get treatment from any health facilities”, he added.

Dr Ooi revealed that the Health Department had set up a Post-Bite Clinic in 64 public healthcare facilities and 29 private health facilities in Sarawak.

He advised urged the public to seek immediate medical care at a Post-Bite Clinic after a dog bite or a cat scratch.

“The wound must be washed immediately under running water and soap for at least 15 minutes.

“Ensure the anti-rabies vaccine is completed according to the appointments given by medical practitioners,” he said.
