NEW DELHI: A collision between an Indian Navy speedboat and a passenger ferry killed at least 13 people off the coast of Mumbai on Wednesday.
The naval craft lost control due to an engine malfunction while undergoing trials in Mumbai harbour, the Navy said.
“As a result, the boat collided with a passenger ferry, which subsequently capsized,” it said in a statement.
According to Maharashtra state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, the dead included three navy personnel and 10 civilians.
A rescue operation was launched using four naval helicopters, 11 naval crafts, one Coast Guard vessel, and three marine police boats.
Two seriously injured people were admitted to a navy hospital while 101 people were safely rescued, Fadnavis said.
A video on social media showed the naval boat crashing into the vessel called “Neelkamal” carrying more than 100 passengers, including foreign nationals, from the iconic Gateway of India to the Elephanta caves.
