SERIAN: A total of 1,264 flood victims from 17 families have been evacuated to Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) in the division following continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days.

Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus reported that the PPS at Dewan Masyarakat Serian alone is sheltering 209 victims from 60 households.

“The worst-affected areas include Tebakang, Sungai Batang Sadong, Batang Kanowit, Lintang Baru, as well as parts of Siburan and Balai Ringin,” he said when met at the PPS Dewan Masyarakat Serian here today (Jan 30).

In addition to severe flooding, landslides and fallen trees have been reported in several locations, disrupting power supply and hindering aid deliveries to affected areas.

John urged residents to remain cautious, especially as water levels continue to rise.

“We advise everyone to be extra vigilant, particularly with electrical supply, as it may be unsafe to use,” he added.

He also encouraged the public to stay informed through official channels, such as local authorities’ social media platforms, for the latest weather updates.

Multiple agencies have been deployed for rescue and relief efforts, including the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM), the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), the Sarawak Social Welfare Department (JKMS), the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA), and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

“Rescue teams have assisted with evacuations while also providing moral support and essential supplies to the victims,” he assured.

However, access to some areas remains blocked, making it difficult to deliver aid.

He asserted that relief efforts are ongoing, but some locations remain cut off due to impassable roads and fallen trees.

As such, he reassured the public that relevant authorities are stepping up efforts to ensure all victims receive the necessary assistance.

The PPS in Serian has been operating since Jan 28 at 11pm following a sudden rise in water levels.

“These centres will remain open until the situation fully stabilises. At this point, it is unclear when they will be closed,” said John.
