KUCHING: A total of 1,200 delegates from 30 countries across the Asia-Pacific region gathered at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today for the opening of the 16th Asia-Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Conference (APHC) 2025.
The opening ceremony was officiated by the Housing, Public Health and Local Government Deputy Minister, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“Hosting this conference is not only a source of pride for us in Sarawak, but also a true reflection of our shared commitment to compassionate, inclusive and quality palliative care,” said Dr Sim in his speech that was read out by Tiang.
Held under the theme ‘Embracing Diversity, Empowering Communities’, the conference highlights Sarawak’s unique position as a multicultural state that values harmony and empathy in healthcare delivery.
Dr Sim emphasised that palliative care must extend beyond medical intervention.
“Palliative care is not just about medicines; it is about humanity. It is about listening deeply, walking alongside, and honouring life in its final chapters,” he stated.
As a trained cardiologist and policymaker, Dr Sim acknowledged the transformative power of compassionate care, while highlighting the importance of empowering local communities.
“We must build sustainable healthcare models, and ensure that no one is left behind, from urban hospitals to the most remote longhouses,” he said.
He stressed that in a region as vast and culturally rich as the Asia-Pacific region, diversity is not a challenge but a strength.
“True care must be rooted in understanding. Embracing diversity allows us to better serve those in need, regardless of background, culture or circumstances,” he added.
“This conference is the perfect platform to collaborate across borders, disciplines and cultures.”
In the speech, Dr Sim also expressed heartfelt appreciation to the professionals, caregivers, volunteers and researchers who dedicate their lives to easing suffering.
“You are the true heroes of this field, and your work matters more than words can express,” he added.
The conference will continue until April 26, with sessions spotlighting innovation, community-based care, and culturally sensitive practices in palliative care across the Asia-Pacific region.
