KUCHING: Twelve new bus stops will be constructed in the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) areas, said mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He said the bus stops were to prepare for the launching of the free school buses for students initiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“If the initiative is implemented immediately, our current bus stops will not be able to accommodate all the passengers as a single bus will be able to carry 30 to 40 passengers at once.

“MBKS has proposed to the Chief Minister that it will build and enhance the bus stops so that they will be able to cater for more passengers,” he said after chairing the MBKS full council meeting at the MBKS Office here yesterday.

Wee revealed that the new bus stops would incorporate shipping containers as part of their designs.

“We (at MBKS) have been looking around and we found there are a lot of used shipping containers available.

“So what we have done is to incorporate them in our   designs so that the bus stops will be portable. This means that if the routes were to change, the bus stops can be relocated to fit in with the new routes,” he explained.

Wee said a show unit of the new bus stop would be placed at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Hua No. 3.

MBKS, he added, was setting aside a budget of RM20,000 for each container.

MBKS would also invite corporate bodies   to sponsor the bus stops and market their  companies by displaying their company names on them.

Among other things discussed during the full council meeting was the placing of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the MBKS areas.

Wee revealed that MBKS together with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had identified 20 areas for the placing of the cameras.

The names of the areas will be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Housing and Local Government for the tenders to be called for the installation of the CCTV cameras.
